I do a lot of drawing, but cry when shelling out the $$$ for Adobe Illustrator.

If you don't excersise layers very intensely, I recommend Inkscape for vector graphics.

I was trying to remember the name of that program. I haven't used it yet but I did download it a while back. I need to convert some drawings to vectors to enlarge. Most of my art can't get larger than a computer screen before it looks like it was put together by Pac-Man.

Google Sketchup is very good for rendering 3D models. A novice can learn how to do it in a few hours.
